The red sun rises and sets; forked lightning illuminates the sky. As time passes on Alabama’s Black Belt, life below in the Hale County community continues its daily trajectories.

“Where does time reside?” Daniel is preparing for college and considering the paths he could take, while Quincy becomes a father. Weaving imagery of life with the surrounding environment, director RaMell Ross creates spectacular visions; the sun behind a tree, shimmering into black smoke rising from a fire; a toddler’s eye-view; people spending time – those in-between moments that seem insignificant, but often lay the foundations of memory.

Exploring the passage of time, Ross creates a sense of how the past exists in layers within the present. With hypnotically beautiful imagery, and a warm, playful relationship with his subjects, this is a lyrical and poetic observation of life in Hale County on the Black Belt region of Alabama.
