Best Of Dochouse: Sleep Furiously: Director Q&AGideon Koppel's love-letter to his home town of Trefeurig, in Wales, is a creative and lyrical exploration of the dwindling flame of rural life.
Sleep Furiously is set in a small hill-farming community in Trefeurig, mid-Wales, a place where director Gideon Koppel’s parents, both refugees, found a home. It’s a landscape that’s changing rapidly as small-scale agriculture, which characterised the area, is disappearing and the last generation who inhabited a pre-mechanised world is dying out.
Taking its title from Noam Chomsky’s famous example of a meaningless sentence, “Colourless green ideas sleep furiously” Koppel manages to bring meaning and poetry to the line. With a score composed by Aphex Twin this is an artistic exploration of the dwindling flame of rural life, a profound journey into a world of endings and beginnings.
