A couple face their future in Cuba together with conflicted desires of whether to leave or to stay.

Although fisherman Orlando struggles to make ends meet, he is content with his life in Cuba, with his young wife Mariela and their extended family and community. Mariela dreams of a better life; financial security and a more stable future, a hope that is driving many Cubans to risk their lives on dozens of attempts to escape by boat and arrive on American soil.

The ‘dry foot, wet foot’ policy granted permanent residency to Cubans who had reached America by boat, while those intercepted at sea were turned away. As this policy faces abolition, their endeavours become more urgent. With a combination of home movie footage of escape attempts, and beautiful cinematography of Orlando’s fishing life, Voices of the Sea paints a complex and intimate portrait of love, dreams and the impact of political forces on contemporary Cuba.
