‘[Judge Kholoud] emerges as someone who’s no threat to religious law, but who’s a real problem for patriarchy.’ — New York Times
Confronting institutionalised sexism within an established, traditional court of law is no easy task – especially in the Middle East. However the remarkably courageous, undeniably talented Judge Kholoud did it anyway – becoming the first woman judge to be appointed to the Shari’a law courts in Palestine.
Tracing her tireless fight for justice for women The Judge tells Kholoud’s incredible story. Providing rare insight into the complexities of Shari’a law and how it manifests within local judicial proceedings, the film illuminates universal conflict through the domestic life of Palestine—custody of children, divorce, abuse—while offering an unfettered look at life for women and Shari’a.
The screening on Fri 23 Nov was followed by a skypSkype with the film's director, Erika Cohn.
