The film takes an unflinching look at the training and dehumanisation of US soldiers, and how life in a war zone affects them physically and mentally. The film overrides familiar images of war with one effortless stroke. We see illness, amputation and injury, depression and post-traumatic stress disorders. Far from being greeted with open arms, America's treatment of veterans is found wanting. The Ground Truth makes it impossible to dismiss its characters simply as war statistics.
