What would make a man gamble his life on a 3000 ft rock face? Both intimate and riveting, Free Solo follows climber Alex Honnold as he prepares to undertake his lifelong dream: to scale El Capitan in California's Yosemite National Park... without a rope. Tracking his physical and mental preparation in the build-up to the climb, directors E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (Meru) explore the various pressures on Honnold, which take an unexpected turn when a new relationship gets serious.
Shot with breath-taking close-up camerawork by the team of mountain-climbing cinematographers, Free Solo is an exhilarating ride and an intimate portrait of an athlete pushing himself to perform a feat which must either be perfect or fatal.
The screening on Tue 11 Dec was followed by a satellite Q&A with the co-directors and Alex Honnold.
