ABOUT THE WHALEBONE BOX

Somewhere between a ramble and a rite, with all the logic of a dream, lies the latest collaboration between psychogeographer Iain Sinclair and artist-filmmaker Andrew Kötting.

The whalebone box is a mysterious relic, a keeper of secrets, washed up on a remote beach in the Outer Hebrides and given to Iain Sinclair almost thirty years ago, kept and never opened.

In 2018, Sinclair and Kötting set off to take the box on an 800 mile pilgrimage back to the Isle of Harris, along with photographer Anonymous Bosch. A bricolage of Super 8, mobile phone footage, pinhole photography and archive film, The Whalebone Box is both the record and culmination of the journey.

Eden Kötting is the film's narrator and also its muse, her voice layered against the found sound and collected words that echo throughout Andrew Kötting's work.

"The film embraces the notion of the home-made but always within the confines of the sound and image perfect. An exercise in hauntological confabulation..." - Andrew Kötting

Director Andrew Kötting will join us for a Zoom Q&A from 8:30pm, hosted by Sarah Perks.

Sarah Perks is a curator and writer, Professor of MIMA School of Art & Design and Programme Advisor for Artist Moving Image for BFI London Film Festival.

The Whalebone Box is a UK digital premiere co-released by HOME and MUBI, available to watch exclusively on MUBI.
