A pillar of her ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jewish Community in Brooklyn, Rachel ‘Ruchie’ Freier decided on her thirtieth birthday that she wanted much more out of life. She became a lawyer and started campaigning to establish Ezras Nashim; the first Hasidic emergency medical response unit run exclusively by women. Her actions are met with a backlash from Hasidic Jewish men, and she struggles to find a Rabbi who will publicly support Ezras Nashim. But nobody puts Ruchie in the corner. While accused of pushing a “radical feminist agenda”, Ruchie continues with charm and determination, in this a rare insight into an extremely private community.
