"Another fascinating piece of cinema-as-history that reminds us that Laura Poitras remains one of our most original, courageous and valuable filmmakers." – RogerEbert.com
"Timing being everything in life, Risk could hardly be more of the moment." – Wall Street Journal
Laura Poitras, Academy Award-winning director of Citizenfour, returns with her most personal and intimate film to date. Filmed over six years, Risk is a complex and volatile character study that collides with a high-stakes election year and its controversial aftermath.
Cornered in a tiny building for half a decade, Julian Assange is undeterred even as the legal jeopardy he faces threatens to undermine the organisation he leads and fracture the movement he inspired. Capturing this story with unprecedented access, Poitras finds herself caught between the motives and contradictions of Assange and his inner circle. In a new world order where a single keystroke can alter history, Risk is a portrait of power, betrayal, truth, and sacrifice.
On Thursday 29 June our Q&A will be followed by a Q&A with Producer Brenda Coughlin hosted by filmmaker and writer Alisa Lebow. You can watch a recording of the Q&A here.
Brenda Coughlin’s most recent projects as an independent film producer include Academy Award-nominated Dirty Wars (2013), about the U.S. drone assassination program, and director Laura Poitras’ Academy Award-winning CITIZENFOUR (2014). She also produced Poitras’ 2016 exhibition Astro Noise at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. She now works with the Bertha Foundation as their Director of Strategic Impact.
Please Note: There has been a change to the Q&A for this screening of RISK on Thursday 29th June. The Q&A will now be with the film’s producer, Brenda Coughlin, who will join us in person in London, not with director Laura Poitras via skype as previously advertised.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO ADVERTS PLAYED BEFORE FILMS IN THE BERTHA DOCHOUSE SCREEN. ALL FEATURES WILL START PROMPTLY FOLLOWING A SELECTION OF TRAILERS.
