NAILA AND THE UPRISING + Q&A

Dir: Julia Bacha
Palestine, State of / United States / 2017 / 76mins

‘The occupation won’t end if we are submissive and stay at home’.

Clandestine classrooms, sewing workshops disguised as political resurgent meetings, creches in political prisons; Naila and the Uprising is the story of the women who led a Palestinian uprising in the late 20th Century.

The documentary tells the story of the Palestinian resistance leader Naila Ayesh, which offers a window in the history of a fierce, relentless and discerning network of Palestinian women who led a civil resistance movement during the First Intifada in 1987. Candidly using domesticity as a tool for progress, these female freedom fighters hid resurgent bulletins in bread baskets, made and distributed food items to replace produce boycotts and started up businesses to sustain their initiative.

Using a combination of archive footage, modern-day interview footage and animation to tell the hidden history of these female insurgents, Naila and The Uprising is a fierce yet inspirational story of people power.

Executive Producer Suhad Babaa will join us at Bertha DocHouse for a Q&A following the screening on Thursday 12th July.

Naila and the Uprising will play daily from Friday 13th July. Check back for tickets and further details.
