CHAVELA

Part of Camden Flux
Dir: Catherine Gund & Daresha Kyi
United States / 2017 / 90mins

Chavela Vargas revolutionised music in Mexico and challenged the status quo with her openly queer lifestyle and hypnotic, raspy voice, singing music traditionally reserved for men.

Starting out as a darling of Mexico’s thriving bohemian club scene in the 1950s, Chavela lived a life full of adventure and excess. She was rumoured to have had relationships with everyone from Frida Kahlo to Ava Gardner and she cultivated her reputation as a powerful, rebellious, free spirited outsider and an outlaw who blazed her own unique trail.

Directors Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi eloquently weave the story of the fearless life, powerful music and passionate love affairs of this uncompromising artist.

CAMDEN FLUX

2017 sees the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act (1967) which introduced the partial decriminalisation of same sex relationships in England and Wales via an act of Parliament.

Throughout the year Camden will host a wide range of events, screenings, exhibitions, talks and online articles to explore, celebrate and reflect upon the history of LGBTQ+ culture, activism, societal shifts and legal and cultural breakthroughs, and to look towards the future in this ever changing social and cultural landscape.
